Cook Out NYC (Governor’s Island)
I was so excited to win two VIP tickets to Cook Out NYC from a Twitter contest Devour NYC hosted last week. I got to choose whether I wanted to go on Saturday or Sunday. I consulted Michelle, who was coming with me, and we decided on Saturday before checking the weather.
But despite the heat, it was a great cookout. If you can still buy tickets for tomorrow’s event, buy them now. Governor’s Island is only a free ferry ride away. We got there at about 11:45 and stayed for a couple of hours. The event was not overcrowded – there were a lot of people there, but you didn’t have to stand in line for more than 5 minutes at any of the food or drink stations. It’s a very well organized event with delicious food. We tried as many stations as our appetite would allow in its heat-induced diminished state.
Of the hot dogs we tasted, both Michelle and I voted for Chef Josetth Gordon‘s dog to win the hot & spicy contest. Her hot dog was topped with crunchy piquant celery slaw with currants. I would have never thought that celery could have so much flavor and taste so good on a plain hot dog. I give the Chef props for both taste and creativity.
I also highly recommend a taste of this grilled cheese. I can easily say it was the best grilled cheese I’ve ever had. The bread is toasty but not greasy. Inside is a gooey mixture of several types of cheese, including gruyere, topped with caramelized onions. So good and decadent.
We couldn’t leave the summer cookout without a burger. Thank you to the chefs at the STK station who were literally sweating their face off grilling and compiling the mini cheese burgers. The meat was perfectly cooked, the buns were fresh and buttery, the sauce was delicious and the pickle chip was crisp.
Cook Out NCY also offers a kimchi eating contest. We didn’t enter but Michelle got this steak taco from the Kimchi tent and gave me a bite. It was delicious but it had way too much heat. For those of you going tomorrow, definitely have a taco or two, but pass on the extra hot sauce. It’s really just too much and the taco has a lot of flavor without it.
I cooled off with a scoop of Smoked Banana and a scoop of Chocolate ice cream from the artisinal ice cream truck parked directly opposite the entrance to the Cook Out NYC area.
All in all a great day. Thanks again to DevourNYC for having the contest and selecting my Tweet as the winner. See you all at next year’s Cook Out NYC.
